Sailing into the Future: Norwalk Seaport Association Supports Young Marine Scientists

The Norwalk Seaport Association (NSA) is making waves once again! At their recent Annual Meeting, the Association demonstrated their unwavering commitment to education and the environment by donating an impressive $10,000 to Norwalk's Brien McMahon Marine Science Academy. This generous contribution is destined to inspire young minds and bolster innovative learning experiences.

A Unique Learning Opportunity for Students

The Marine Science program, has gained recognition for its hands-on, interactive approach to marine education. Students leave the confines of their classrooms and head to Sheffield Island, a jewel of Norwalk Harbor. On the island, they engage in coastal ecology studies, bird-watching tours, and other unique activities that bring the wonders of marine science to life.

Rick McQuaid, President of the Norwalk Seaport Association, expressed the organization's pride in supporting this one-of-a-kind initiative: “We are honored to be an active partner in this program where students get the chance to learn outside the classroom on Sheffield Island. We can't wait to see how these future scientists and environmentalists grow.”

A Partnership Built on Shared Goals

The partnership between the NSA and the Marine Science Academy began in 2019, and it has since flourished into a collaborative force for good. Eva Bartush, Marine Science Academy Coordinator, praised the Association for its enduring support: “This very generous donation will continue to support our program and the innovative projects and experiences we provide for our students. The Seaport Association has been with us since the start, providing trips to Sheffield Island for our students, teacher training sessions, and more.”

The Academy has already achieved some remarkable milestones. For example, in May 2022, students launched their first mini-boat as part of the Educational Passages Program. Equipped with GPS, solar panels, and temperature probes, the boat traveled across the Atlantic and was recovered in Norway in February 2023. Currently, two more student-built boats are at sea, capturing data and sparking curiosity. A portion of the Seaport’s donation will help defray the cost of the 2025 mini-boat.

Ghosts and Spirits of Sheffield Island

According to the popular magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, in 2023, Sheffield Island Lighthouse, along with the Mark Twain House, in Hartford were listed as supposedly the "spookiest and most paranormal activity sites in Connecticut!" We were amazed at that revelation...but happy to be in the legendary company of the esteemed Mark Twain! We had to delve deep... and thought of one of Twain's quotes..."Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't."

We think urban legends surrounding the 1868 Sheffield Island Lighthouse are fun. So many tales float on the tide and in the sea breeze about the ghosts and spirits that linger on the island... too bad they didn't leave buried treasure to help us with our mission! At the end of the day, we understand their love of Sheffield Island... our summer guests have told us for years how much they enjoy the island and how hard it is to leave. Quite frankly, we agree and are grateful to everyone who has helped us keep Sheffield Island Lighthouse an icon of the New England coastline.

Another tale, according to Conde Nast Traveler, involves an archeologist in the 1990s who heard strangely chanting music, and a foghorn when heading to the island by boat (not ours). Spoiler alert, once again, there is no fog horn on Sheffield Island! But as you all know, we love music, which is why we have so many nationally recognized entertainers at the Norwalk Oyster Festival!

All urban tales aside, Sheffield Island and Lighthouse has been a top destination for families and lovers of lighthouse lore, legends, and tales for years. We love welcoming people, from near and far to the island and sharing its fascinating history, and the legacy of Connecticut's maritime heritage that continues to thrive.

The Last Lighthouse Keeper in U.S. Steps Down

The historic Boston Light on Little Brewster Island overlooking Boston Harbor was constructed before the Revolutionary War. The original lighthouse, constructed in 1716 stood 60 feet high and was circular in shape with a tapering tower made of rubblestone. On the grounds of the tower, a keeper's house, barn, and wharf were built and, a fog horn cannon was installed in 1719.

When the American Revolution came, the islands in Boston’s harbor were the site of several skirmishes between patriots and British soldiers and sailors. The British took over Boston Light in 1774. In July of 1775, local Massachusetts patriots decided to destroy the lighthouse to prevent the British from benefitting from its use. The British rebuilt the lighthouse within a matter of days! The most significant damage happened as the British were leaving the harbor ---- they blew up the Boston Light for good in 1776 -- or so they thought!

The new lighthouse wasn't built until 1783. It was similar to the first lighthouse because it was circular in structure and made of rubblestone. The difference was the height as the new lighthouse was 75 feet tall. Another difference was that this lighthouse didn't use candles, it had four fish oil lamps as its beacon. In 1811, a revolving mechanism was installed to create a flashing light, and in 1859, a second-order Fresnel lens was installed to replace the chandelier of oil lamps and reflectors. At this time, the height of the lighthouse was increased to 89 feet.

Over the years, many improvements were made to the Boston Light. For example, fog signals were upgraded several times, and other buildings, some still standing, were constructed; others were reused for different purposes. In 1948, the Boston Light was electrified and in 1957 a cable was run from Windmill Point to drive the rotating mechanism of the Frensel lense, so the keepers didn't have to wind it every four hours! This modernization however didn't affect one important duty of the keeper. Every day, at sunrise and again at sunset, the keeper had to climb the steep iron staircase to turn the switches on or off for the light and rotating gear.

In 1959, the Boston Light was changed from a family-operated to a male-only station under the auspices of the Coast Guard. In 1964, Boston Light became a National Historic Landmark and in 1987, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1989, a bill sponsored by Senator Kennedy required that the Boston Light remain permanently manned, making this lighthouse the only legislatively manned lighthouse in the United States. The island's light became fully automated in 1998, ending the keeper's climb to the top twice a day. The site was officially opened to the public in 1999.

A new chapter in the story of the Boston Light occurred in 2003 when Sally Snowman, was appointed as light keeper. Snowman was not only the first woman to attain this role in the long history of the Boston Light, but she was also the first civilian appointed since 1941.

After a twenty-year stint beginning in 2003, in December 2023, Sally Snowman, the only remaining lighthouse keeper in the United States retired. Snowman has not only served as the keeper, she is also a historian of this 307-year-old icon that overlooks Boston's rocky shoreline. She enjoyed regaling the tales of the lighthouse with the visiting public and hopes this tradition continues. Dressed in 18th-century inspired clothes that would have been worn by a lightkeeper's wife or in a Coast Guard uniform she ascended the 76 spiraling steps to clean the windows and polish the lens that acts as a beacon of warning to keep mariners from smashing into the rocks. She also mowed the lawn and maintained the six additional buildings on the grounds of the island. A professor by profession, it was her fantasy to become a lighthouse keeper since she visited the island at age 10. As the lightkeeper for 20 years, Snowman told NPR, " “It’s sort of a metaphysical type of thing that – I felt something so deeply in my heart and in my cells and the space between the cells that it came into fruition. It’s a fairy tale come true."

For much of her time as a lighthouse keeper, she lived on the island. In 2018, due to a portable water problem, the public could no longer visit the island, and Snowman could no longer live there. Tenacious as ever, Snowman decided to commute to the island from her home in North Weymouth. This commute could take up to an hour and a half one way over open water in her six-foot skiff. Until she retired in December 2023, Snowman's visits were dictated by weather and tidal cycles, resulting in stays of up to an hour or so, or not at all, when storms kept her away. Snowman, now 72, plans on spending her retirement researching historical documents and making presentations. Reflecting on her time as lightkeeper, Snowman told WBUR, "I believe we are all beacons of light. We are all lighthouses from our heart space. So for me to be out there for 20 years, my energy is going to be out there. It's there."

The lighthouse is now being sold to a private owner. The arrangement with the new owner is that the site must be preserved. Let's hope that the new owners and their staff will do a good job of maintaining the traditions of the lighthouse keepers around the world and preserving the history of this historic site.

Lighthouse Lore - America's First Lighthouse

Sheffield Island Lighthouse off the coast of Norwalk, Connecticut shares a proud history with lighthouses around the world. Although, not an active lighthouse, it is on the National Register of Historic Places and is still a beacon for boaters and visitors who cruise with us every summer to tour it and enjoy our private island. In our continuing winter series of Lighthouse Lore, we are featuring America's first lighthouse.

Today, active lighthouses are overseen by the United States Coast Guard, which is responsible for the upkeep, and maintenance of all lighthouses and light vessels in the United States. It wasn't always that way, and the evolution of the control of lighthouses and the story of America's first publically funded lighthouse is interesting.

The story begins in New York City's Federal Hall in 1789 during the first session of the First United States Congress. During this historic session, the U.S. Treasury was founded, George Washington was inaugurated as the nation's first President, and the United States Lighthouse Establishment was created. It was also at this session that Jacob Wray asked Alexander Hamilton, the newly appointed Secretary of the Treasury to build a lighthouse on the shoreline of Cape Henry, which had already claimed 57 maritime vessels. There was a great deal of public pressure for safe waterways and navigation, so Hamilton contracted designer John McComb Jr., the designer of the planned residence of the President to construct a lighthouse and light up the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay.

At this juncture, all U.S. lighthouse ownership was transferred to the Federal Government and the newly formed General Lighthouse Authority. In 1792, the first federally funded public works construction project authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton began with the construction of the Cape Henry Lighthouse at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. This location was considered strategic because of the large volume of shipping traffic that was headed into the bay. The vital ports of Norfolk, Newport News, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. are all accessed through Chesapeake Bay.

The lighthouse is an octagonal structure that is 26 feet wide and rises 90 feet to the tower with three windows in the east and four in the west. Like much of Washington D.C. at that time, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was built of Aquia and Rappahannock sandstone. It was completed in October of 1792 for $17,700. After its completion, George Washington himself asked for applications for the lighthouse keeper who was selected by him. The first keeper, Laban Goffigan, of Norfolk, Virginia was hired in late October 1792. The lighthouse lit the bay with lamps that burned fish oil. The Cresset was one of the earliest types of lamps used in a lighthouse that burned fish oil. It consisted of a bowl hollowed out of stone which was filled with fish oil with one or more small rope wicks.

Adding to its storied past, during the American Civil War, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was damaged by Confederate forces, but repaired in 1863 by Union forces. They depended on its light for navigation and merchant ships depended on it to deliver their supplies. Unfortunately, in the 1870s a lightning strike caused large cracks in the Cape Henry Lighthouse and its stability came into question. Congress was made aware of this and decided to build a second lighthouse here because of its strategic location. The second lighthouse, which is much taller and made of metal plates with a distinctive black and white stripe was constructed in 1881. It was built a mere 350 feet away from the original lighthouse and remains in use today. The original Cape Henry Lighthouse remains standing acting as a daylight marker for triangulation.

In 1930, the lighthouse was acquired by Preservation Virginia. How it All Began... Lighthouses - Sentinels of the Sea

The duties of a sentinel are serious business....and we are not talking about the Sentinels of X-Men fame from Marvel Comics! Historically, sentinels were guards, a lookout, or a person keeping watch to protect, most often, this person was a soldier. In ancient times, sentinels were critical in battle because they provided advance notice of threats that could destroy an army...and they are still relevant. With a nod to history, the soldiers who stand watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetary, are called Sentinels. This is a cherished and honored duty and these Tomb Guards are chosen only after rigorous training and a demanding series of exams.

It is believed that the origin of the word sentinel dates to 1570s Italy and that the word stems from "sentina" meaning vigilance and, to hear and perceive. So, it should be no surprise that lighthouses are often called the "sentinels of the sea" because they watch over the water in treacherous areas and are instrumental in guiding ships and their crews to safety. To those ancient seafaring men, long before GPS was invented, lighthouses were much more than just a lonely light shining from a tower; they were the difference between a successful voyage and one that ended in disaster.

Today's modern lighthouses are amazing wonders that combine so many skills from mathematics, optics, and architecture, to the latest technology. Most of the automated lighthouses have replaced rotating lenses with high-intensity lights that emit brief omnidirectional flashes much like those used to warn aircraft of tall structures. Lighthouses have come a long way! As a matter of fact, all the working lighthouses in the United States except the Boston Light which dates back to 1783, are automated.

The maritime heritage of lighthouses, of which Sheffield Island Lighthouse is a part goes back to the ancient world. The first known lighthouse was the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt, considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was commissioned by one of Cleopatra's ancestors, Pharoah, Ptolemy I around 300 B.C. and completed by his son, Ptolemy II in 282 B.C. It was built on the island of Pharos, just outside the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt which was the most important Mediterranean trading city of the Roman Empire.

According to some ancient sources, the construction of the lighthouse was the work of Sostratus, a Greek architect and military engineer from Cnidus, a town in modern-day Turkey, that at the time, was under Ptolemaic control. On the other hand, the Greek geographer, Strabo believed that Sostratus was the financial backer and that Ptolemy II allowed him to take credit for building it. Unfortunately, this debate has been lost to the mists of time, and we will never know who the architect actually was.The Alexandria Lighthouse rose 330 feet on the very tip of the island of Pharos and was considered an astounding engineering wonder. It was constructed so that it would face the two natural harbors of Alexandria, one called the Great Harbor, and the other with the ironic name, the Harbor of Fortunate Return. Linked to the mainland by a quarter-of-a-mile causeway called the Heptastadion, goods flowed easily and quickly into and out of the city.

The Alexandria Lighthouse has roughly a 1600-year history. That said, ancient writers didn't leave an exact description of the design of the lighthouse. Most sources agree that there was one tall white tower that could be seen for miles and that the lighthouse had three floors. It is believed that the first floor was rectangular, the middle was octagonal, the third floor was round, and that the top of the tower was crowned with a statue of Zeus Soter. Because wood is scarce in Egypt, oil and not wood was most likely burned in the tower to light the way. According to ancient sources, there was a mirror made of polished bronze to reflect the flame far out to sea as an aid to safely guide vessels into the harbor.The lighthouse disappears from historical records sometime during the 14th century, presumably destroyed by an earthquake. In its place, the Citadel of Qaitbay was built on the ruins of the lighthouse in the 15th century. Modern archeologists have found many stone fragments and ruins in the vicinity of the Citadel including a monumental figure of Ptolemy I and his queen, Berenice.

Although the Alexandria Lighthouse at Pharos may not be the first lighthouse ever constructed, it is the first monumental one in recorded history. Lighthouses have been built over the centuries as navigational aids -- to show where there were hazardous shallows or submerged rocks, something that is as important today as it was in the ancient world. Sheffield Island Lighthouse is proud to be part of this long maritime history that goes back to the ancient. world.

Did You Know...

Perhaps the Lighthouse of Alexandria may not have been one of the most successful lighthouses when it came to guiding ships and their crews to safety. Marine archeologists have found more than 40 ancient wrecks in the area where the ancient harbor was located.

It took more than twenty years to complete building the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Part of the lighthouse was discovered by a French archeologist.

The city of Alexandria uses the symbol of the lighthouse on its national flag.

Why Taking a Sunset Cruise with the Seaport Association Is A Good Idea

While most of us admire the sunset from the shoreline, taking in the sunset on the water is an extraordinary experience that can be done close to home, right in Norwalk, Connecticut. It's nice to know that you can do something unique that is close by and easy to get to without planning a big fancy getaway. Imagine breathing in the fresh ocean air and feeling the tingle of the salt on your face as you slowly cruise past the islands situated right off the coast of Norwalk in Long Island Sound. There is a feeling of serenity watching seabirds glide as oystermen pull up their catch for the day as you cruise past Norwalk's necklace of islands.

Taking a two-hour sunset cruise with the Seaport Association through Norwalk Harbor is always a good idea because there is no better or more affordable way to experience Norwalk Harbor than on board the Seaport's vessel.

The two-hour sunset cruise is offered by the Seaport Association Wednesdays - Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through September 17th. After welcoming passengers aboard, the journey begins as the vessel slowly wends its way through Norwalk Harbor, passing many islands. Some of them have idyllic names like Tavern Island, once owned by the famous Broadway playwright Billy Rose, Chimmon Island, the largest island in the Norwalk Chain of Islands, and Shea Island, named in honor of native Pfc. Daniel Shea, Medal of Honor recipient for his bravery in the Vietnam War.

Highlights of the sunset cruise include passing Sheffield Island Lighthouse, built in 1868, and two rare sparkplug Lighthouses, Peck Ledge built in 1906, and Greens Ledge built in 1902. As the vessel returns to the dock, passengers watch as the city of Norwalk begins to light up, and just in time for dinner, with many restaurants steps away from the Seaport Dock.

Sounding Off - Fun Facts About Long Island Sound

At one time, Connecticut and Long Island Sound were covered in a sheet of ice that was part of the Late Wisconsin Glacier which dates to about 18,000 years ago. Long Island Sound was formed when glacial ice tore a huge hole in the land and formed Lake Connecticut. As the sea levels and sediments shifted, the lake receded, making way for the rivers and ocean to take its place, forming what we know today as Long Island Sound.

On our way to Sheffield Island Lighthouse, we cruise Long Island Sound. We have put together some fun facts about Long Island Sound to think about during your on-the-water adventure.

Sounding Off - Fun Facts!

Technically, Long Island Sound is an estuary getting its water from the Atlantic Ocean, the Thames, Housatonic, Mianus, Mill, Norwalk, Pequonnock, and the Connecticut Rivers.

90% of the freshwater in Long Island Sound comes from three main rivers in Connecticut, the Thames, the Housatonic, and the Connecticut Rivers.

Long Island's directional positioning is unusual among estuaries in the United States. Most large estuaries are orientated north-south. Long Island Sound has an east-west orientation.

If you draw a straight line down the center, Long Island Sound is approximately 21 miles wide at its widest point and 113 miles long. The amazing thing to remember is that it covers more than 600 miles of coastline because of all the bays and inlets.

Long Island's surface area is 1300 square miles and contains about 67 billion tons of water.

The deepest channel in Long Island Sound is known as "The Race." The depth of this channel ranges between 60 feet and 350 feet deep.

This estuary is sheltered from high winds and has two high and two low tides a day, making it perfect for boating. This is one of many reasons why our cruise to Sheffield Island is so pleasant.

Long Island Sound is Connecticut's most important natural resource according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). More than eight million people live along Long Island Sound's watershed area. The recreational activities enjoyed along the Connecticut coast generate more than $5.5 billion per year.

DEEP also notes that Long Island Sound provides feeding, breeding, and nesting areas for a diversity of plants and animals. It is home to 120 species of finfish and countless birds.

Four of our Favorite Spring Wildflowers on Sheffield Island

In Connecticut, wildflowers are one of the most colorful ways that signal spring has arrived. The delicate blossoms of spring on Sheffield Island are nature's gift after a long cold winter. We love wildflowers because they help Sheffield Island's soil remain healthy and provide nectar for pollinators. Although the star attraction is the Lighthouse, the surrounding landscape has beauty everywhere you look so we decided to show you just four of our favorite spring wildflowers on Sheffield Island.

The first flower and a perennial favorite on Sheffield Island is the common blue violet (viola papilionacea). It is such a graceful plant with its heart-shaped leaves and five-pedaled blossoms. Did you ever notice that they are shaped like a butterfly? This flower's genus name is viola which is Latin for violet. Many think that it came from the Greek word, vion, a name related to Io, the beautiful water nymph whose tears turned to violets. We like to think that she loves Sheffield Island! The species name, papilionacea is Latin for butterfly-like, just look at the flowers to see the resemblance. Ecologically friendly, common violets are an important source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and moths.

In a shaded area on the Island, you may spot Common Chickweed, a delicate white blossom, which is widely dispersed throughout the world. Many people consider this a weed, not knowing that it has been used in folk medicine for centuries. Chickweed has been used as a remedy for itchy skin and as an aid to treat bruises and aching bones. Chickweed is edible and often used like sprouts! It is said that the cooked leaves taste like spinach. Unless you can positively identify this plant, don't eat it!

Beach Peas are just beginning to emerge. This sprawling vine, which is a proud member of the pea family, grows among driftwood and windswept sandy beaches. In Connecticut, it can be found along the shoreline, in salt marches, and hiding amid sand dunes. Beach Peas is a circumboreal species, meaning it exists around the northern hemisphere, as well as in Europe and Asia because the seeds of this plant remain viable in seawater for long periods of time, and somehow made their way around the world. In August, this long vine with its waxy dull green leaves produces showy purple flowers, that gradually turn blue as they mature... but more about that later!

Peeking out of the woods is a graceful clump of Starry False Solomns Seal. A native woodland plant, it has glossy green leaves and a plume of bell-shaped creamy white flowers spectacular in May and June. To fast forward the flowers are followed by attractive red-mottled berries that contrast beautifully with its green leaves in August. By September, the berries turn a rich mango color and the leaves turn to the color of wheat.

Seaport Association Receives CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant from CT Humanities

The Connecticut Humanities awarded the Seaport Association located in Norwalk, Connecticut with a generous grant of $27,900 from CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant from CT Humanities (CTH). CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grants assist organizations as they recover from the pandemic and maintain and grow their ability to serve their community and the public.

“The Board of Trustees and I are very grateful to the Connecticut Humanities, the DECD/Connecticut Office of the Arts, and the Connecticut State Legislature for providing this crucial funding opportunity to the Seaport Association. This grant gives the Seaport Association the vital support it needs to create programs that strengthen our outreach to our community and beyond. It enables us to share the story of Norwalk’s maritime history and the importance of Sheffield Island Lighthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places and to create diverse events that are inclusive,” says Jerry Toni, Business Manager of the Seaport Association.

The Seaport Association was one of 723 organizations in Connecticut receiving a CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant. Totaling more than $8.5M, these grants are part of a two-year, $30.7M investment in arts, humanities, and cultural nonprofits by the CT General Assembly and approved by Governor Ned Lamont. This CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant is provided to the Seaport Association from CT Humanities, with funding from the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut State Legislature.

The Norwalk Seaport Association is offering a number of seats at no charge for one adult and one child from Connecticut as part of the Connecticut Summer at the Museum Program. This program is geared toward families exploring the beauty of Connecticut's attractions together. "We have been overwhelmed by the demand and positive response from this program and have made more seating available to meet the demand," said Jerry Toni, Business Manager of the Seaport Association.

"We are thrilled to participate in this program this year because it helps us accomplish our mission of educating young people about the importance of Connecticut’s maritime heritage and why preservation is so important," Toni said.

Seaport Association Receives Funding from CT Humanities For Connecticut Summer @ the Museum

The Seaport Association was awarded a grant from CT Humanities for participating in Connecticut Summer at the Museum 2022 initiative. This program invites Connecticut children ages 18 and under plus one accompanying Connecticut resident adult to visit participating museums free of charge from July 1 through September 5, 2022. Funding for the initiative is provided by the CT General Assembly, with the support of Connecticut Humanities, the Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the federal ARPA.

“We are very proud to be among the grant recipients,” said Mike Reilly, President of the Seaport Association. “This infusion of funding will help us achieve our mission of education by introducing children from Connecticut, 18 years old and younger to our historic lighthouse and its maritime history that is such an important part of Connecticut’s cultural heritage. We are looking forward to sharing this experience with families from Connecticut this summer.”

A day out on the water and a visit to Sheffield Island Lighthouse, a historic museum provides a special opportunity that can positively impact mental health, demonstrably improve learning outcomes among children and youth, and offer positive activities and outlets in many of the neighborhoods, towns, and cities that we serve. As children and students missed out on more than two years of group and school visits to our institutions as part of hands-on, interactive learning, the CT Summer at the Museum Program gives these children and students a chance to experience our maritime heritage and our historic lighthouse on Sheffield Island in Norwalk.

The program, that the Seaport Association is participating in invites Connecticut children ages 18 and under plus one accompanying Connecticut resident adult to visit participating museums free of charge from July 1 through September 5, 2022. Departing from Norwalk Harbor at the Seaport Dock located on 10 North Water Street in Norwalk, guests are in for a picture-perfect experience at sunset with the Norwalk Seaport Association . Imagine relaxing on comfortable seats and watching the stunning scenery of Long Island Sound glide by as you sip on your favorite glass of wine and nibble on the goodies that you have packed to bring aboard the vessel.

This summer the Association is offering Sunset cruises Wednesday – Sunday from June to September. Sunset cruises depart at 6:30 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m., just in time for a late-night snack at your favorite restaurant. On a sunset cruise time seems to slow down giving you the opportunity to unwind and toast the end of the day or celebrate the end of a busy week! A special perk of taking a sunset cruise is that it allows you to spend some quality time with whomever you are with.

The friendly crew welcomes passengers as the Captain tells stories of merchants and sailors that have used this scenic waterway for centuries. Learn how Native Americans introduced oysters to English settlers and how captains of industry used this area to develop trade routes that went as far as the West Indies. The narrative gives a new understanding of Norwalk historically, and also reflects the importance of this scenic harbor today.

As the vessel travels into Long Island Sound it will give passengers a close-up view of several of Norwalk’s islands and the beautiful homes that are built on them. The cruise also passes three historic lighthouses, Peck’s, Green Ledge, and, the maritime icon of Connecticut, Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Architecturally stunning the Sheffield Island Lighthouse is a perfect example of Victorian stone masonry. Green Ledge and Peck’s are fine examples of sparkplug lighthouses, of which only 33 remain in the United States. The view of these three lighthouses up close as the sun begins to set is magical.

Guests will travel in safety and comfort with no more than 49 passengers on board the vessel owned by the Seaport Association. Seabird Cruises with the Seaport Association Begin in May!

New this year, the Norwalk Seaport Association has just announced that they will be starting their popular bird cruises on Sunday, May 1 and May 15, and on Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29th from 8 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Regardless of whether you are a veteran bird enthusiast or a beginner, this on the water avian adventure will give your birding routine a new perspective. Gliding quietly along the water gives participants a sense of connection with the beauty of Long Island Sound resulting in the joyful feeling of being ‘one with nature.’

As the old saying goes, the early bird catches the worm, which is why many bird enthusiasts head outdoors in the early morning. With this in mind, the Seaport Association’s Bird Cruise will leave the dock on 10 Water Street in Norwalk at 8 a.m. “Birds sleep at night and are hungry in the morning, so they have to go out and eat,” says Will Schneck, a passionate bird enthusiast that will be leading the cruise. “We are leaving at 8 a.m. because this is the time of day when birds are most active, particularly in the spring and early summer. Just like humans have daily schedules, birds also have daily patterns for feeding, roosting, and other activities.”

On this guided tour with Schneck, a member of the esteemed Connecticut Young Birders Club, passengers will learn about local bird behavior and biology and, most importantly how to spot them. Every cruise is different because you never know what bird species might fly your way, making this excursion an adventure in itself! A highlight of this eco-styled bird cruise is the chance to spot birds in their natural habitat in a way, you would never see from shore. Among the types of birds, you may see on this eco-adventure cruise are nest sites and nest colonies of ospreys, and long-legged egrets with their graceful S-curved necks and long dagger-like bills, as well as playful American oystercatchers, herons, terns, gulls, and cormorants to name a few.

A special feature of this cruise is the chance to spot birds at the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge on Sheffield Island. Here you will see a variety of habitats that support nesting and wading birds. This spot is known for its small population of herring and great black-backed gulls that nest along Sheffield Island's rocky shoreline. What to Take On Our Harbor and Sheffield Island Cruises

One of the highlights of summer is getting out on Long Island Sound with the Norwalk Seaport Association . We offer a variety of on-the-water excursions from outer harbor cruises and sunset cruises to a journey to Sheffield Island Lighthouse where people can tour our ten-room historic lighthouse, have a picnic in our wooden pavilion, stroll along the beach, or hike in the adjoining Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.

Here are six tips on what to bring on one of the Norwalk Seaport Association's cruises so that you make the most out of your excursion.

1) Get A Marine Navigation App

If you like to know where you are going there are many helpful marine navigation apps that give you real-time animated weather radar on a background map that is easy to zoom in and out of. 2) BYOB On A Sunset Cruise

We allow BYOB on our vessel, many people have enjoyed a glass of wine or a beer on our sunset cruises. Remember to bring a bottle opener and plastic cups, glass is not allowed on the boat. Pack a picnic of cheese, crackers, and fresh fruit to enjoy onboard.

3.) Enjoy A Picnic on Sheffield Island

Sheffield Island is the perfect place for a picnic! Sheffield Island's beach offers so many scenic nooks and crannies to enjoy a feast! Remember to bring a blanket if you want to dine al fresco on our beach and bug spray, just in case. If you prefer, you can have a picnic in our open-air wooden pavilion that has picnic tables with picture-perfect waterfront views.

For your picnic basket, make sure that your food is prepared or cooked ahead of time. If you are not bringing disposable forks and spoons, make sure that your goodies are finger-friendly. Norwalk Seaport Association Welcomes Summer Campers

New this summer, the Norwalk Seaport Association is now welcoming regional organizations that offer summer camps for children to come and visit Sheffield Island and Sheffield Island Lighthouse for an unparalleled maritime excursion. Preservation of the island and lighthouse as well as offering educational opportunities for children are two of the founding principles that the Norwalk Seaport Association has been founded on.

If organizations and summer camps are looking for a new camp activity that will delight and engage kids of all ages, they should consider renting the Norwalk Seaport Association’s vessel the C.J. Toth for an excursion. The Norwalk Seaport Association has developed two options for camp educators to choose from, both offer an educational and rewarding experience at affordable price points.

A two-hour harbor cruise is scenic, educational, and fun. The vessel will take children out into the outer Norwalk Harbor passing three historic lighthouses and Norwalk’s necklace of islands. The Seaport Association will provide information on each lighthouse as an aide to educators as well as historical information on the area. Cruises can also be narrated by request. On the cruise, children will also see sea birds and oyster boats that will round out this educational eco-experience.

The second option is a cruise to Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Here, children will delve into local history as they explore the island, visit the ten-room lighthouse, and walk the trails of the adjoining National Wildlife Refuge where they will have the chance to learn about the environment and birdlife of Long Island Sound. Camp counselors will be provided with historical information on the lighthouse to make for a more engaging experience and tours will be offered. In addition, activities on the island planned by educators could include a picnic, scavenger hunt, or a variety of summer lawn games.

The Norwalk Seaport Association’s vessel can carry up to 45 socially distanced passengers and is available for this charter on Mondays and Tuesdays, during the day. For millennia, seabirds have made Long Island Sound off the coast of Norwalk, Connecticut their home. Birders and nature enthusiasts have spotted waterfowl, shorebirds, and seabirds along with migrant birds of all types in this rich natural environment. As the third smallest state in the country, amazingly, Connecticut boasts 430 different bird species; and one of the state’s birding “hotspots” are the Norwalk Islands.

On Sundays in June, on the 6, 13, and 20, the Norwalk Seaport Association is offering a specially curated Bird Cruise around the Norwalk Islands from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. These two-and-a-half-hour cruises will be led by Will Schneck, a passionate bird enthusiast that combines superb birding skills with an astonishing command of bird biology and habits. As a member of the esteemed Connecticut Young Birders Club, he will share his knowledge and expertise about local seabirds and their behavior. Schneck is an excellent communicator, has a great sense of humor, and is tireless in helping others spot the birds and wildlife of Long Island Sound.

Year after year participants on this special cruise agree that every cruise is different because you can never anticipate what bird species might fly your way, making this excursion an adventure in itself! Watching birds in action from the water, whether they are nesting or on the hunt for food is an exhilarating experience. Among the types of birds, you may see on this eco-adventure cruise are nest sites and nest colonies of ospreys, and long-legged egrets with their graceful S-curved necks and long dagger-like bills, as well as playful American oystercatchers, herons, terns, gulls, and cormorants, to name a few.

A unique highlight of this cruise is the chance to spot birds at the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge on Sheffield Island. February 18, 1936 ~ November 1, 2020 (age 84)

On Sunday November 1, 2020 Norma Zukin passed away at Norwalk Hospital at the age of 84.

Norma was born and raised in Norwalk, CT and was the President of the Rowlison Insurance Agency, where she began her career in 1958. She has been an active member of the Norwalk Seaport Association since 1981 when its original office was on Washington Street. Norma became a Trustee with the Seaport in 1995, and was a regular volunteer at the many Seaport events over the years. She served as a Trustee and Secretary on the Board of the Seaport Association and was a Co-Chairperson of the Kids Cove at the Oyster Festival since 1997. She loved working with fellow volunteers and greeting the thousands of kids who came to the Festival each year. In 2017 Norma was awarded the Seaport’s highest honor as a recipient of the Beacon Award.

She began volunteering at Norwalk Hospital in 1981 where she started as an office tech doing clerical work, in addition to assisting with patient care, a position she loved and remembers as a rewarding experience. At that time, she also began volunteering at the hospital gift shop, and served as a bookkeeper. Every Saturday for 39 years, with the exception of Oyster Festival Weekend, Norma continued to greet visitor at the Norwalk Hospital gift shop. Norma has seen many changes over the years, technology and otherwise, and remained a dedicated volunteer through it all.

The Seaport Association will have a special ceremony in the spring of 2021 on Sheffield Island honoring Norma, to recognize her accomplishments and contributions as a volunteer, Trustee and officer.

In February of 2020 Norma’s lifetime commitment to our community was recognized by the Norwalk Exchange Club at its annual Pillars of the Community event when Norma received the Outstanding Pillar of Community Service award.

When asked who or what inspires her, Norma says, “People inspire me.”

Norma, your dedication and hard work inspired us…you will be missed.

Norma is survived by her sister Gertrude Zukin.

The Sheffield Island Lighthouse sits proudly in Long Island Sound off the coast of Norwalk. Constructed in the Victorian style in limestone masonry, Sheffield Island Lighthouse has guided mariners for more than 150 years and is cherished in Connecticut and beyond. The story of its continuing restoration and maintenance didn't happen by magic, hard work, special fundraising events, and a team of dedicated and determined volunteers is what preserves this structure that is so important to Connecticut's and Norwalk's history.

Today, the Seaport Association needs financial help. Along with many others, the Seaport Association has had to cancel many fundraising events because of the restrictions posed by COVID-19. As a non-profit organization, the Seaport Association operates year to year with very modest cash reserves and an army of faithful volunteers. In order to remedy the situation, the Seaport Association has created a GOFUNDME campaign to help raise desperately needed funds, which will go toward educational programs and the maintenance and preservation of Sheffield Island and the Sheffield Island Lighthouse.

In its long history, Sheffield Island Lighthouse has withstood many storms. "For the first time in 42 years, we had to cancel the beloved Norwalk Oyster Festival, our major fundraising event of the year, along with many other signature fundraising events. We need financial contributions to offset the loss of income from our inability to implement our key fundraisers due to COVID-19. In 1978, a core group of faithful volunteers formed the Seaport Association that sparked the resurgence of South Norwalk. The Seaport Association became a founding member of the Maritime Aquarium, now one of the best in the country. Members of the Seaport Association didn't stop there. Never resting on their laurels, the Seaport Association went on to purchase Sheffield Island Lighthouse and the Keeper's Cottage in 1986, and, by 1989, through their efforts, the Lighthouse and Island were put on the National Register of Historic Places. The Seaport’s popular Sunset Cruise floats through scenic Norwalk Harbor as the Captain's Mate tells stories of merchants and sailors that have used this waterway for centuries. Learn how Native Americans introduced oysters to English settlers and how captains of industry used this area to develop trade routes that went as far as the West Indies. The narrative gives a new understanding of Norwalk historically, and also reflects the importance of this scenic harbor today.

As the vessel travels into Long Island Sound it will give passengers a close-up view of several of the Norwalk’s islands and the beautiful homes that are built on them. The boat leaves from the dock on 10 North Water Street at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday – Sunday evenings. It is best to arrive at the dock at 6:00 p.m. to facilitate the boarding process.

Sound sights: Norwalk cruises return with restrictions

Mike Reilly loves being on the water. And seeing a lighthouse up close, well, that makes it even more special.

“Tt’s just so peaceful, especially in today’s world,” he said. Reilly, president of the Norwalk Seaport Association, said if you do nothing else this summer, be sure to come out on a cruise to see the Sheffield Island Lighthouse, and bring your camera, because the views are stunning.

The 152-year-old Sheffield Lighthouse isn’t open now, because of the pandemic, but it’s still “an amazing place and a great piece of history,” Reilly said. “When people go out on the boat and see it for the first time, it makes them feel like they’re someplace far away, yet it’s right here.”

Both the Seaport Association (seaport.org) and the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk (maritimeaquarium.org) offer guided cruises that take passengers by Norwalk’s three lighthouses. Masks are required and there’s ample space for social distancing, as the boats are limited to half their normal capacity. Another option for getting out on the water is via the GetMyBoat app. You can rent a boat or book a water experience with a captained charter in a few clicks. Nearly 80 boats are available in Connecticut.

Janet Serra, of the Norwalk Seaport Association, said the Seaport’s two-hour cruises are fun for all ages, although families with kids seem to show up more for daytime excursions, where you get “crystal-clear views of the lighthouses and nesting sea birds.” People have been known to bring a bottle of wine on the sunset cruises because, she said, noting, “It’s nice to have a glass of wine and watch the sun go down.”

Between the views and gentle breeze, it’s a delightful experience, but this journey also includes some fascinating history. Serra said passengers get to hear the tale of how Native Americans shared the joy of eating oysters with early English settlers, a Norwalk specialty still enjoyed today.

The harbor area was busy with commercial shipping in the 1700s, when sloops sailed to places such as the West Indies. Every journey was filled with danger, as Norwalk’s waters once teemed with pirates. In the 19th century, manufacturing companies lined the banks of the channel. Today it serves water-dependent commerce and recreational marinas.

Passengers also get to see two spark plug lighthouses, named so because of their shape and water-tight structure made of metal. One is Peck Ledge, built in 1906; the other is Greens Ledge, built in 1902. Legend has it the latter was named after a pirate who sailed with Captain Kidd, and that he was executed and tied in chains to Greens Ledge as a warning to deter marauding buccaneers.

That’s just one of many stories you'll hear on this cruise. (While we’re on the subject, did you know Capt. Kidd was first appointed by the British authorities to tackle piracy, but later switched sides?)

There is nothing more refreshing than the cool, clean sea breeze flowing through your hair and the sun on your face while taking a cruise through the scenic Norwalk Harbor to a trio of Lighthouses with the Seaport Association.

This fascinating two-hour cruise begins with a leisurely cruise through the historic Norwalk Harbor. Passengers will hear the tale of how Native Americans shared the joy of eating oysters with early English settlers, a Norwalk specialty still enjoyed today. The harbor area has a rich history of commercial shipping with 18th c. sloops sailing to ports as far as the West Indies and, the engaging stories of Norwalk's waters that once teemed with pirates. In the 19th century, prominent manufacturing companies lined the banks of the channel including the Norwalk Lock Company and the Lockwood rolling and slitting mill that once churned out high-grade iron ore. Today, the channel serves water-dependent commerce and recreational marinas.

On this cruise, passengers will see two of only thirty-three remaining sparkplug lighthouses still in existence in the United States. Named sparkplug because of their unique shape and water-tight structure made of metal, Peck Ledge built-in 1906, and Greens Ledge constructed in 1902 are maritime gems that passengers will get the rare chance to view, up close. Legend has it that Greens Ledge was named after a pirate that sailed with the infamous Captain Kidd. It is said that he was executed and tied in chains to Greens Ledge as a warning to deter the dastardly deeds of marauding buccaneers. This is just one of many intriguing stories you will hear on this new cruise!

The grand finale of the harbor cruise is to pass by historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse, the undisputed icon of Connecticut’s maritime heritage. Located at the southern end of Norwalk’s necklace of islands the current Victorian styled lighthouse was built in 1868 of limestone masonry. It is a classic -- replete with a distinctive octagonal light tower in the gable that offers views of the Manhattan skyline. You will also see a wildlife refuge, cute light keepers cottage, and the new wooden pavilion that is available for rent and ideal for special events.

The real bonus of the new Seaport Association’s cruise is that it gets people out of the house, in the fresh air, and on the water. It is a chance to unwind and re-energize in the scenic beauty of Long Island Sound that extends in every direction.

Cruise Schedule and Details

Starting Saturday, June 27 the Seaport Association will run day time cruises at 12 noon and 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through September. Sunset Cruises will be offered Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, at 6:30 p.m. through September. Weekday cruises begin on July 1, with daytime cruises offered Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., and on Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The boat will not run on Monday and Tuesday.

All ticketing will be “contactless, for tickets click here or call 203-838-9444. Adult tickets are $30, children 12 and under $18, and a family pack for four passengers is $75. Sunset cruises are $30 per person. The boat sails promptly as scheduled so it is best to arrive at the dock 30 minutes before departure. The Association cannot accept cash or transaction at the Seaport Dock.

The Norwalk Exchange Club founded more than seventy years ago is well known for its’ numerous fundraising activities that help make Norwalk a better place to live. The Exchange Club supports a variety of community services in Norwalk as well as the national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

This year on February 22 at 6 p.m. the Norwalk Exchange Club is hosting the Fourth Annual “Salute to Outstanding Pillars of the Norwalk Community.” This highly anticipated event will be held at the Norwalk Inn. Norma Zukin, a Trustee, and Officer of the Norwalk Seaport Association, will be awarded with this years’ Pillar of Public Service Award for volunteering at the Norwalk Hospital Gift Shop for 38 years.

Norma has always provided a listening ear, a kind word, and does what ever is needed at the time. Norma’s generosity of spirit and her gracious acts of helping others is greatly appreciated. This well deserved award recognizes Norma’s time and gift of compassion for making a difference in people’s lives. The Seaport Association is honored to have Norma as an Officer and Trustee.

The Clambake Classic Golf Tournament

It will be a day of putts, pars, and pitching and friendly competition at this year's Clambake Classic Golf Tournament on Monday, October 7, 2019, at the Oak Hills Park Golf Course. This annual fundraiser hosted by the Norwalk Seaport Association benefits the ongoing work and upkeep of Sheffield Island Lighthouse. “Our shoreline themed tournament is unlike any other charity outing around and no other tournament offers greater value”. What makes this tournament so unique is that golfers play their own ball but score as a foursome. “We call our format “Captain & Crew” which is fun for all levels of golfers,” Sabol added.The Clambake Classic Golf Tournament kicks off at 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. with registration and is followed by a Clambake Dinner at Oak Hills Park Golf Course from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A highlight is the upscale clambake that includes New England clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, steamed clams, and a choice of 1.25 pound lobster, NY strip, grilled salmon or marinated grilled chicken that will be served with traditional red potatoes, corn on the cob, rolls, coleslaw and cookies. “It’s such a great way to end the golf season.” The Tournament officially begins at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start where players come out swinging! The fun continues with a hole in one, 50/50 hole, the longest drive, and closest to the pin! At this event everyone is is a winner because all participants get a gift package as well as the chance to try their luck at line prizes and the raffle.The cost is $185 per golfer that also includes two raffle tickets for upscale prizes. There is nothing more relaxing - and romantic than watching the sun dip beyond the horizon while gazing at the beautiful Connecticut coastline with a glass of wine or Champagne in hand and the sea breeze in your hair. The Seaport Association of Norwalk has a plan that lets summer lovers hold on to that season just a little longer by offering the final sunset cruise of the season on Friday, October 5. This is the perfect way to kick off the first weekend in October! Visitors can board the Seaport Association's 45-foot C.J. Toth catamaran that leaves from the dock on 4 North Water Street in Norwalk at 6:30 p.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m. On this relaxing two-hour cruise through Norwalk Harbor and into Long Island Sound gives passengers beautiful views of the city of Norwalk with its beautiful waterfront homes and marinas. Along the way, passengers can look for seabirds and spot nests made by them. This excursion will take you by several islands, including Sheffield Island, the crown jewel that has the 150-year-old Sheffield Island Lighthouse as its centerpiece. As the sun sinks slowly into the horizon, don't forget to bring your camera for unforgettable early autumn sunsets, on the water.Passengers can bring wine or beer and snacks onboard. Don't forget to bring a bottle or wine opener, plastic cups and a bag to carry them off the vessel. Parking is available at the Maritime Garage and boarding the vessel begins at 6 p.m. It is good to arrive a little early to snag the best seats, although, on this ride, every seat offers a fabulous view! Tickets are available online and advance reservations are recommended as this cruise is popular and could sell out. Tickets are a deal at $25 per person ($26.87 with service fee). If you are a last minute planner, there may be tickets available at the dock the night of the cruise; however, by Coast Guard Regulations, the vessel can only accommodate 49 very lucky people!

Photographer and author David Zapatka will discuss his images of Northeastern lighthouses and stars on Sunday, June 3, at 2:00 pm at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center in Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich. The presentation is part of the Fred Elser First Sunday Science Series at the Seaside Center, which includes family activities on lighthouses and stars from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. Members of the Greenwich Astronomical Society will also be on hand to help with star charts and night sky activities.David ZapatkaAfter seeing these images of the Sheffield Lighthouse and other lighthouses displayed at this event, visitors may want to take a cruise to Sheffield Island with the Seaport Association in Norwalk with their camera in hand! The cruise to Sheffield Island is about a three hour "on the water" journey that offers a variety of angles and photo ops of the lighthouse. An additional bonus is the hour or so on the island that you can use to line up that perfect shot!
