    Commissioning Day C.J. Toth

Please click on "Register Online" for a chance to win a family (4) four pack to Sheffield Island.

Norwalk, CT (April 15, 2016) - - The Norwalk Seaport Association (NSA), which owns and stewards the Sheffield Island Lighthouse and Park, will officially open its season with a Commissioning Day event on Saturday, May 21st.  The festivities will take place from 3:00pm to 7:00pm with a blessing of the NSA’s ferry “The CJ Toth” by Reverend Artie Kassimis, Pastor of World Alive Bible Church in Norwalk.

The event promises to be fun for the whole family with music by the Tim Currie's Motown Band. Walk-on tours of the ferry, and giveaways.  “A spring commissioning ceremony is a centuries old seafaring tradition,” says NSA President Vincent Scicchitano.  “For the Norwalk Seaport Association it’s when we put the ferry in the water and really gear up for all the great programs we have in the warm weather months on Sheffield Island and around the Norwalk Islands like clambakes, sunset cruises, pirates weekends, the Haunted Lighthouse weekend. Plus, it’s just a whole lot of fun to be by the water and celebrate the long-awaited spring.”

Sheffield Island Park hosts more than 5,000 visitors each year from Connecticut and beyond, including many school and scouting group tours.  The island includes the historic Sheffield Lighthouse and the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge, with its self-guided walking tour including interpretive signs. The NSA offers frequent excursions to the island and lighthouse tours via its ferry docked behind the Maritime Aquarium.  The island may also be used for special catered events such as corporate outings, weddings, and other celebrations.

The Norwalk Seaport Association was founded in 1978 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, education and public awareness of Norwalk’s maritime environment and heritage. The NSA has owned, restored and maintained Sheffield Island Lighthouse since 1986 and is the official U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Friends group for the Norwalk Islands.

For more information on the Commissioning and other Norwalk Seaport Association programs and events, or to reserve the ferry and island for private events, contact 203-838-9444 or visit www.seaport.org.

Join us for one of the most exciting tours that the Norwalk Harbor Islands area has to offer! During this unforgettable adventure tour of Sheffield Island and Lighthouse, you'll step directly from the boat into the past. Sheffield Island is located in the outer reaches of Norwalk Harbor providing unique views of the city and the surrounding waterways.

During your time on the island, you may want to enjoy a picnic lunch you brought along and take in the spectacular view of the harbor from its most recognized gateway.

Due to liability concerns, the Sheffield Island staff is disallowed to assist with lifting or pushing a wheelchair or stroller. It will be important for the physically challenged to travel with a companion abled to assist them.

-Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled, unless tour is canceled by the Norwalk Seaport Association (i.e. in the event of severe weather).

Join Larry Flynn,  Master Wildlife Conservationist, CT DEEP, Division of Wildlfe, to explore and understand the importance of the Norwalk Islands, and it's many migratorial bird species.

You will visit thousands of birds at a safe distance, nest sites and nesting colonies of Ospreys, Egrets, American Oystercatchers, Herons, Terns, Gulls, Cormorants and many more.

"It's always exciting, everyday is different, there is no normal, turn the corner and it's wow, what's that?"

"Just when you think you have it all figured out, they do something different" said Larry.

There is bird watching and then there is Bird Watching, " I get very involved into what the birds are doing as in bird behavior, trying to understand this move from that"

"We have seen stand downs between large Gulls or Falcons attempting to prey on smaller birds and sometimes larger birds and their chicks, it is unbelievable what happens out there".

"Watching adult birds flying food back from the mainland to an island nest is a novel or two in itself"

"Nat Geo at it's best, is in our own backyard, you don't need a TV to find it, it is right here"

These are some of the experiences what you will see and explore on the Norwalk Seaport's Educational Bird Cruises
