The Norwalk Seaport Association has owned, restored and maintained Sheffield Island Lighthouse since 1986 and is the official U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Friends group for the Norwalk Islands.

PLEASE BE PATIENT WHILE THE PAGE LOADS

Sheffield Island with its historic 145-year-old lighthouse, beaches and wildlife refuge offers abundant summer fun for visitors.

From May through September, visitors can board the Seaport Association's 45-foot C.J. Toth catamaran for a cruise to the island then tour the lighthouse, observe wildlife in their natural habitat in the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, hunt for shells along the beach, dine on a picnic lunch, play on the lawns around the lighthouse and just have a good time. The lighthouse tower
(closed for renovations) provides magnificent views of Long Island Sound and, on a clear day, of the New York City skyline.

Join us for one of the most exciting tours that the Norwalk Harbor Islands area has to offer! During this unforgettable adventure tour of Sheffield Island and Lighthouse, you'll step directly from the boat into the past. Sheffield Island is located in the outer reaches of Norwalk Harbor providing unique views of the city and the surrounding waterways.

During your time on the island, you may want to enjoy a picnic lunch you brought along and take in the spectacular view of the harbor from its most recognized gateway. Explore the island's history, light tower (closed for renovations) and buildings or just relax and enjoy being on island time!

Note: - Sheffield Island is a rocky outcrop with rolling terrain and the docking facilities do not meet ADA regulations. Every effort has been made to minimize non-compliance. The gangway leading from the dock to the island is wide enough to accommodate a standard wheelchair. The gangway incline (steepness) is determined by the height of the tide; at low tide it is steeper than at high tide. Due to liability concerns, the Sheffield Island staff is disallowed to assist with lifting or pushing a wheelchair or stroller. It will be important for the physically challenged to travel with a companion abled to assist them.
-Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled, unless tour is canceled by the Norwalk Seaport Association (i.e. in the event of severe weather).
-All climbers must be at least 8 years old or 50 inches tall to be eligible to climb the tower (closed for renovations)
-Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes with a closed heal or back strap to keep the shoes on the feet. Flip-flops are not allowed due to safety concerns.

Your boat leaves from the Sheffield Island Lighthouse dock located at the corner of North Water Street and Washington Street in Historic South Norwalk. Parking is available adjacent to the dock and the Norwalk Maritime Center Garage.

    • Norwalk Islands
Sun, sea breeze and beautiful wildlife make a perfect combination and that's just what the Norwalk Seaport Association offers up in its bird-watching.

Set to depart from the Seaport Dock adjacent to the Stroffolino Bridge at the corner of Washington and Water streets in South Norwalk, the 45-foot C. J. Toth Quest catamaran will take participants on a up close, two and a half hour cruise of the Norwalk Islands.

Join Larry Flynn,  Master Wildlife Conservationist, CT DEEP, Division of Wildlfe, to explore and understand the importance of the Norwalk Islands, and it's many migratorial bird species.

You will visit thousands of birds at a safe distance, nest sites and nesting colonies of Ospreys, Egrets, American Oystercatchers, Herons, Terns, Gulls, Cormorants and many more.

"It's always exciting, everyday is different, there is no normal, turn the corner and it's wow, what's that?"

"Just when you think you have it all figured out, they do something different" said Larry.

There is bird watching and then there is Bird Watching, " I get very involved into what the birds are doing as in bird behavior, trying to understand this move from that"

"We have seen stand downs between large Gulls or Falcons attempting to prey on smaller birds and sometimes larger birds and their chicks, it is unbelievable what happens out there".

"Watching adult birds flying food back from the mainland to an island nest is a novel or two in itself"

"Nat Geo at it's best, is in our own backyard, you don't need a TV to find it, it is right here"

These are some of the experiences what you will see and explore on the Norwalk Seaport's Educational Bird Cruises
